Technology in Ms. Boutwell's Class
My Kindergarten classroom currently contains 21 Kindle Fire tablets, 3 student computers, 1 teacher computer, 1 teacher iPad, and 1 SMARTboard. We also have a 30 minute technology exploratory time each week with our Technology teacher. I consider myself very lucky to have all of this technology.
Each student is in charge of his/her tablet. If the battery gets low, it's the student's job to plug it up to charge. We rotate through centers during reading and math time, and each student gets to go to the "Tech Time" center. While in the Tech Time rotation, students choose whether they want to work on their tablet, or the computer. If students choose their tablet, they can play on one of the educational apps that I've loaded onto them. If they choose computer, they do MOBYmax or ABCya.com. If a student wants to use the computer and they are full, they sign up on a sheet of paper- like a waiting list. Students also can use their tablets in other centers. For example, I have QR codes around the room that take them to Storyline Online (link) and a celebrity will read them a story. Students also use the Seesaw app often while working in small group with me. At the end of each day we have Technology/ Intervention time for about 20 minutes. We use this time for students to work on MOBYmax, which is an intervention strategy our RTI team suggests. I don't let students take technology home, but I periodically have "BYOD" day (Bring Your Own Device Day). Most of my students have some sort of technology at home that they can bring. I also do not use a sign out sheet, since we are a 1:1 classroom.
Again, I'm very lucky that my students have access to so much technology. Even in my own school, some students do not have as much access to technology as we do.
